PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This qualification is registered at level 5 of the National Qualifications Framework. Learners acquiring this qualification will demonstrate competence across areas including cash and credit, stock management, customer service policy, merchandising policy and promotion strategies. Learners will also demonstrate competence against standards registered in the business, commerce and management studies field of learning where they will be able to manage the performance of people, manage operational aspects of stores, manage recruitment, selection and induction of people and manage financial issues.

Learners will have a choice of elective areas where they will be able to develop and enhance retail and wholesale practices in either:
  • Clothing, textiles, footwear and accessories.
  • Furniture and appliances.
  • Food handling.
  • Other speciality areas which will be enhanced as the needs in retail and wholesale emerge.

    The fundamental learning which learners will acquire will allow them to be able to influence retail and wholesale stakeholders, write business reports and manage integrated data.

    Learners will have attained the NQF Level 4 qualification in retail and wholesale practices through competence assessment or recognition of prior learning.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Learners will produce evidence of the following:
  • Descriptions and explanations of cash and credit strategies and potential successes and failures of such strategies, techniques for researching target markets, tools used for stimulating consumer interest, possible organisational policies for improving customer service, a range of methods to manage performance of others, recruitment and selection techniques and a range of financial tools.
  • Demonstrations of a cash audit, start of day cash procedure, coaching session designed to improve service, a daily stock movement process in and out of a retail and wholesale store, a performance appraisal of a staff member, recruiting a staff member and developing a budget. These will cover a particular area of specialisation.
  • Production of a credit risk plan, a merchandising strategy showing implemented standards, a promotional strategy for an identified target market, sales staff performance reports, a customer feedback system, evidence of recent customer service changes implemented, a sample procedure for stock holding administration, a store manpower plan and a budget.
  • Handle a negotiation with a supplier and a customer and produce a business report for a given period which will include all related data.
