In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for people who work, or intend to work in a Yacht and Boat Building environment where composite marine components, are constructed and/or repaired.

The learner will be able to select and apply the appropriate resin/cloth/core materials in both new construction and repair procedures. The successful student will also be able to perform basic cosmetic repairs to fibreglass structures damaged by impact.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of resins, cloths and core materials used in composite boat construction.
  • Apply resin, fabric and core materials in both a new construction and a repair situation.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of composite boat structures.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • The unit standard:
    > Keep the workplace safe and productive at NQF Level 2.
    > Apply knowledge of basic laminating techniques at NQF Level 2.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
All work is performed under supervision.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate an understanding of composites in a marine environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Resins used in boatbuilding are explained focusing on the physical property data of composite marine materials.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The combination of reinforcement materials and resin systems are explained according to a variety of structural laminates.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The advantages and disadvantages of different core materials are explained according to their physical properties.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Apply resin, fabric and core materials in both a new construction and repair situation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Core materials are identified for various boat building applications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Optimal strength to weight ratio is explained according to composite construction.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Composite components are constructed and repaired according to structural composite procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Demonstrate an understanding of composite boat structures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The advantages and disadvantages of Solid laminate construction in terms of established practices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The advantages and disadvantages of Solid laminate with stringer construction are explained according to established practices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The advantages and disadvantages of Cored laminate/sandwich construction are explained according to established practices.
