PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for anyone who has to pack a food product hermetically in gable top or brick type cartons.

A person credited with this Unit Standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of hermetic gable top or brick type carton packaging.
  • Prepare to pack a food product in gable top or brick type cartons.
  • Pack a food product hermetically in gable top or brick type cartons.
  • Perform end of packaging procedures.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    In the context of this Unit Standard a gable and brick type carton has to be formed, filled and hermetically sealed. Hermetic sealing refers to the packaging of food products in air-tight containers and not necessarily aseptically.

    Pack continuously for 30 minutes at an acceptable packaging rate, at the correct weight or volume and without product and packaging material wastage.

    Where packaging equipment is operated simultaneously with other production processes, the forming, filling and sealing process is synchronized according to standard operating procedures.

  • Brick type carton refers to a type of folded carton, resembling a brick shape, i.e. those used for packaging of fruit juices.
  • Gable top carton refers to a type of folded carton with a peaked top space, i.e. those used for packaging of fresh milk.
  • Hermetic sealing refers to the packaging of food products in air-tight containers (not necessarily aseptically).
  • Standard operating procedures refer to company procedures, prescribed procedures from the manufacturer, personal safety and food safety practices and procedures, good manufacturing practices, best practices, applicable legislation, time frames, recipes and specifications.
  • Where the term food is used, beverage is also implied.
