PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to sketch and describe the construction of specific parts of the hull structure. They will also be able to sketch and describe the structure and attachment of various hull fittings.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:

  • This unit standard involves the basic knowledge of specific parts of the hull structure and fittings on a sea going vessel.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Sketching and describing the construction of specific parts of the hull structure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The construction of each specific part of the hull structure is sketched using accepted maritime free hand drafting conventions and terms. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Specific parts of the hull structure may include but is not limited to double-bottom structure for longitudinal and transverse framing; bilge structure; keel structures; connection of superstructures to the hull at the ship's side; deck edge connections; deck-freeing arrangements, a plane and corrugated bulkhead and the transom stern.
  • Sketches must show connections to deck, sides and double bottom and the arrangement of stiffeners.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose of bilge keels and how they are attached to the ship's side are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The provision of additional structural strength to withstand pounding and panting are sketched using accepted maritime free hand drafting conventions and terms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Function of the stern frame and stem is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The specific parts of the hull structure are described with reference to their use and application.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The structural components of a ships hull are pointed out and described on a drawing. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The structural components of a ship's hull on ship's plans and drawings includes but not limited to frames, floors, beams, knees, brackets, shell plating, decks, bulkheads, pillars, hatch girders, coamings, bulwarks, cant beams and breast hooks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Longitudinal, transverse and combined systems of framing on transverse sections of ships are pointed out and described using industry terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Stress concentration in the deck round hatch openings is explained in terms of compensation for loss of strength. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The safety features of specific parts of the hull structure are pointed out and described using marine sector specific examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reasons why the shaft tunnel and engine room are watertight are explained in terms of the ships performance. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Sketch and describe the structure and attachment of various hull fittings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The structure and attachment of various steel hatches are sketched using accepted maritime free hand drafting conventions and terms. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Steel hatches may include but are not limited to steel hatches, coamings and cross joints.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Moorings arrangements are sketched using accepted maritime free hand drafting conventions and terms. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Mooring arrangements may include but are not limited to the leads of moorings, rollers, multi-angle, pedestal, Panama fairlead, bilge pumping system of a sea going vessel with screw-down non-return suction valves, strum boxes and sounding pipe arrangements.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The bilge system and attachments are sketched using accepted maritime free hand drafting conventions and terms. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The bilge system may include but are not limited to fire main, fitting air pipes to ballast and fuel tanks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The rudder system and arrangements are sketched using accepted maritime free hand drafting conventions and terms. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The rudder system may include but are not limited to modern rudders, semi balanced, balanced, spade, how the weight of the rudder is supported and winch to deck connection.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The anchor system and arrangements are sketched using accepted maritime free hand drafting conventions and terms. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Steel hatches may include but are not limited to securing arrangements hawse pipe, spurling pipe, chain lockers, securing of cables and cable stopper.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    An explanation is given of how the water tightness of the various hull fittings is achieved on the ship.
