PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to explain the general bunkering process to a vessel and demonstrate the initial preparation and understand the procedures to be followed prior to bunkering. They will also be able to perform bunkering activities and complete them.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the general bunkering process from shore to vessel or vessel to vessel.
  • Preparing for bunkering activities.
  • Performing bunkering activities.
  • Concluding bunkering activities.

    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

  • Marine diesel and fuel oil bunkering activities are between a shore bunkering facility and a vessel against the quay side.

    The specific steps and stages in the bunkering process are explained in accordance with standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Specific steps may include but are not limited to: notification of bunkering activities, checking operation of radios, fuel tank soundings, plugging of scuppers, empty and plug save-alls, placing oil absorbent material, establishing communication links, air pipes open and clear and fire precaution activities confirmed.

    The equipment and resources used at the various stages of the bunkering process are identified and their function explained in terms of their use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The routine and emergency safety requirements involved at each stage of the process are explained with examples.

    The legal framework and the related responsibilities are explained as they apply in the bunkering process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The specific steps in the bunkering process are explained are explained in accordance with standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Specific steps may include but are not limited to: protective clothing, no smoking, pumping rates, supply line pressure, checking for leakages, emergency procedures, regular soundings, ullages and visual inspections of tanks linked to pumping rate, communication between parties, reducing pump rates when changing over between tanks, check tanks air vents for oil spillage, space left in filled tanks for venting and draining hoses after bunkering.

    The routine and emergency safety requirements involved at each stage of the process are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Factors to be considered when conducting bunkering activities are explained in terms of maintaining safety. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors may include but are limited to: safety issues, recording tank soundings and taking fuel samples.

    Bunkering steps are carried out in accordance with standard operating procedures and by following the specific steps.

  • Check drained hoses, close & blank off manifold & hose couplings, check valve settings, soundings, meter readings, bunkering documentation.
