PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to describe the construction and operation of marine power plants and describe the construction and operation of the auxiliary machinery and systems. They will also be able to describe the construction, operation of the steering gear and describe the construction, characteristics operation, and maintenance and safety precautions for generators, alternators and electrical distribution systems as well as describe the construction and operation of the oily-water separators and oil filtering equipment.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing the construction and operation of marine power plants and auxiliary machinery and systems.
  • Describing the construction and operation of steering gear.
  • Describing the construction and operation of generators, alternators and electrical distribution systems.
  • Describing the construction and operation of oily-water separators and oil filtering equipment.
  • Describing the construction and operation of the deck machinery.
  • Describing the construction and operation of hydraulic systems.

    Describe the construction and operation of marine power plants and auxiliary machinery and systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The definition of the efficiency of the marine power plant is given in accordance with accepted maritime terminology. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Marine power plants may include but are not limited to the four-stroke diesel engine.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The construction and operation of the machinery and systems relating to the marine power plants is explained in terms of their functions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Machinery and systems may include but is not limited to the methods of supercharging, the fuel oil system from bunker tank to injection, the lube oil system and the engine cooling-water systems.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The method of preparing a diesel engine for stand-by and starting is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The construction and operation of auxiliary machinery and systems is explained in terms of their functions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Auxiliary machinery and systems may include but is not limited to domestic water system, pumps and pumping systems, pump types-displacement, axial-flow or centrifugal.

    Describe the construction and operation of steering gear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The construction of steering gear is described according to the manufacturer's specifications and legislated requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The operation of steering gear is explained in terms of its use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An electric steering control system is described in terms of how it functions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    How the change from remote to local control in the engine room is made is described with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Describe the construction and operation of generators, alternators and electrical distribution systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The construction and characteristics for generators, alternators and electrical distribution systems are explained with reference to manufacturer's specifications and legislated requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The operation and maintenance for generators and alternators is explained with reference to manufacturer's specifications and legislated requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The operation and maintenance for electrical distribution systems is explained with reference to manufacturer's specifications and legislated requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Electrical systems may include but are not limited to navigation light circuit with indicators and alarms, alternative power supply, lead-acid batteries and alkaline batteries.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The safety precautions to be adhered to during operation and maintenance are explained in terms of the impact on people and the vessel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Methods and techniques for the maintenance of batteries are explained with practical examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The starting requirements for emergency generator are explained in terms of processes to be followed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    A list of services which may be supplied from the emergency generator is given in accordance with specific vessel requirements.

    Describe the construction and operation of oily-water separators and oil filtering equipment.

    The main purpose and operation of oily-water separators is described with examples of its uses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The construction and operation of oily-water separators is described with reference to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The functions of an oil-content meter is described in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An oil discharge monitoring and control system is described in terms of its construction and function. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Describe the construction and operation of the deck machinery. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The process for the design and performance of anchor windlasses is described in terms of its approved, classification and certification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The construction and operation of the deck machinery is described according to manufacturer's specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Deck machinery may include but is not limited to an anchor winch, cargo winch, slewing deck crane, its motors and its controls and the spooling device to distribute the wire evenly on the drum of a mooring winch.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The lubrication of deck machinery is explained is explained in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Describe the construction and operation of hydraulic systems. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    A hydraulic system for deck machinery may include but is not limited to an oil tank, pumps, control valves, hydraulic motors and pipe work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The construction and operation of the hydraulic systems is described in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The characteristics of the hydraulic oil are described with an example of each. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Characteristics of hydraulic oil may include but are not limited to temperature before starting, cooling, viscosity and cleanliness.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The results of air in a hydraulic system are explained with examples of the consequences. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
