PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to set up, evaluate the performance of radar and operate, interpret and analyse information obtained from radar with reference to the movement of other vessels in the area. Learners will also be able to use the radar as an aid to avoid collisions and use the radar in blind pilotage circumstances.

The procedure for setting up the radar is explained in terms of optimal performance and maintaining this performance. |

Factors affecting performance are described in terms of their impact on accuracy. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Factors that could lead to misrepresentation of information by the radar set are identified in order to prevent misrepresentations occurring. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
The main factors that can lead to misrepresentation of information on the radar display need to be identified include but are not limited to false echoes, sea return, racons and SARTS Search and Rescue Transponders. |

The process of identifying the echoes of other ships is explained that are critical, plotting and determining of their CPA, TCPA, course and speed. |

The effects of change of speed and/or course of own vessel is explained on the CPA and TCPA of other targets. |
