PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the construction details and maintenance of pressure vessels. They will also be able to understand the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of auxiliary boilers, demonstrate the constructional details and working principles of air compressors. They will also be able to understand the safe operation and operation of deck machinery.

The qualifying learner is capable of:

    The safe and efficient operation of auxiliary boilers is explained in terms of their use and application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The routine maintenance procedures of auxiliary boilers are explained in terms of safety and operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not maintaining auxiliary boilers are explained with examples of the impact on safe operations.

    Explain the constructional details and working principle of air compressors.

    The construction of air compressors are explained in terms of their safe operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    How air compressors work is explained in terms of their use and application on board a vessel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The maintenance requirements of air compressors is explained in terms of keeping them operational. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain the safe operation and maintenance of deck machinery. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Types of machinery which should include but not limited to winches, windlasses, stocker pond, fishing gear/equipment, davits, cranes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Deck machine/equipment is explained in terms of their use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The safe operation of deck machinery is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The maintenance of deck machinery is explained and recorded in accordance with standard operating procedures.
