PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to explain how beaching, grounding, re-floating, collisions and the impairment of watertight integrity are managed and explain in detail how an emergency situation will be managed. They will also be able to identify and explain in detail the management role of the international and national maritime organisations that deal with emergencies, distress signals at sea in port.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Explaining how beaching, grounding, re-floating, collisions and the impairment of watertight integrity are managed.
  • Explaining in detail how an emergency situation will be managed.
  • Identifying and explaining in detail the management role of the international and national maritime organisations that deal with emergencies and distress signals at sea, and emergencies in port.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain how beaching, grounding, re-floating, collisions and the impairment of watertight integrity are managed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Precautions to be taken when beaching a ship are explained in order to maintain safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Action to be taken if grounding imminent, or after grounding is explained according to shipboard procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The refloating of a grounded ship is explained with and without assistance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Action to be taken if collision is imminent is explained appropriate to the situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Action to be taken following a collision is explained appropriate to the situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The management of incidents are explained where the impairment of the watertight integrity of the hull as occurred by any cause. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain in detail how an emergency situation will be managed. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The emergency situations to include but not limited to failure of steering gear, towing and situations that result in damage to own ship.

    Emergency steering systems are explained with maritime specific examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Emergency towing agreements, towing procedures and the dangers associated with this are explained with examples of how to carry them out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Damage control is assessed in accordance with shipboard procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify and explain the management role of the international and national maritime organizations that deal with emergencies and distress signals.

    The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) world Search and Rescue (SAR) plans are explained with maritime specific examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The requirements of the South African Search and Rescue (SASAR) manual is explained with examples.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
