PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is aimed at people who operate as community development workers or are involved in community development initiatives, including government, non-government, and the private sector. The Unit Standard will enable learners to acquire knowledge and understanding that supports an integrated and holistic approach to community development. Learners will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to enable them to drive community participation from an active citizenship perspective as underpinned by human rights principles as enshrined in the Constitution of South Africa.

The learner who achieves this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of an integrated and holistic framework for community development.
  • Identifying and explaining government policies which have an impact on community development.
  • Working as part of a team to promote a holistic and integrated approach to community development initiatives.

    An integrated approach to community development is explained with reference to a specific community context.

    Integrated includes but is not limited to various government agencies, community based organisations, non-governmental organisations, ward committees, local networks and structures.

    A holistic approach to community development is explained in terms of the different elements within a specific community context in a manner that underlines the importance of this approach.

    Holistic includes but is not limited to social, economic, political, geographical.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An integrated and holistic approach to community development is evaluated in terms of its strengths and weaknesses for a given scenario.

    An integrated and holistic approach is explained with reference to a selected community development project. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Potential challenges of an integrated and holistic approach are discussed and reflected upon and recommendations made in a specific community context provide improvements for future projects.

    The role of teamwork within an integrated framework are discussed and described in terms of the advantages and impact on community development initiatives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Co-operation, cooperative behaviour and knowledge-sharing between stakeholders are defined and explained in terms of their role and importance in community development. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stakeholders include but are not limited to community development workers, social workers, local municipality, health and welfare, sanitation, safety and justice, public institutions, government, non-governmental organisations, community members and groups.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different ways of promoting synergy through holistic and integrated cooperative participation are planned for with reference to enhancing community initiatives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The purpose of a holistic and integrated approach to community development in the South African context is illustrated in a community development initiative with reference to community benefit.
