PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will lead learners to acquire knowledge and skill to effectively manage relationships in their life situations.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying different types of relationships.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of self in relationships.
  • Explaining the importance of communication in building and maintaining relationships.
  • Exploring ways of managing interpersonal relationships. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communications at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard is relationships in own life situation at home, school and work including social and family relationships.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify different types of relationships. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The concept of a relationship is explained and an indication is given of the different types of relationships in own life. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The qualities of a positive relationship are described with reference to relationships in own life. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The qualities of a negative relationship are described and an indication is given of the possible consequences of a negative relationship. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of self in relationships.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Own needs are identified in different relationships and an indication is given of own expectations in each relationship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal qualities that influence relationships are identified and an indication is given of whether the effect on relationships is positive or negative. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Personal values and attitudes that impact on relationships are identified with reference to commitment and nurturing the relationship.

    Explain the importance of communication in building relationships.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The influence of choice of words and non-verbal communication on relationships is identified with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Non-verbal communication includes, but is not limited to, body language, tone of voice, facial expression, all aspects of voice control and gestures.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Non-verbal communication that encourages or discourages communication is identified with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different methods of communicating in a relationship are identified and an indication is given of when each method is appropriate. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Communication includes empathetic listening, speaking and all forms of written and oral communication, electronic and face to face.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of appropriate communication about feelings, emotions and thoughts is explained with reference to specific relationships.

    Explore ways of managing interpersonal relationships.

    Behaviours that convey honesty, trust, respect and empathy are explored in authentic situations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Techniques for managing conflict are identified for different scenarios. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Techniques include assertive, submissive and aggressive behaviour.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role of boundaries in relationships is explored for different types of relationship.
