PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to the understanding of engineering processes and materials. It is the starting point for a learner in this sector. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in relation to the learner`s own context and experience of the world of work.


The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the basics of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • Explaining and describing the basics of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.
  • Describing and explaining the basics of thermo-plastic and thermosetting plastics.
  • Explaining and defining machining principles and processes in engineering. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in mathematics, engineering science and technical drawing at NQF level 4 or equivalent.
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in computer technology at Level 4 on the NQF or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Various types of iron and steel will include cast-iron, gray iron, white iron, wrought iron and low, medium and high carbon steel.
  • Non-ferrous metals will include tin, lead, copper, zinc, antimony and aluminum.
  • Various elements alloyed with steel will include carbon, manganese, nickel, chrome, vanadium, tungsten and cobalt.
  • Various alloys will include high-speed steel, manganese steel, nickel, chrome steel, nickel-chrome steel, stainless steel and vanadium steel.
  • Non-ferrous alloys will include brass, bronze, solder, white metal and duralumin.
  • Thermoplastics will include nylon, polymethymethacrylate (perspex) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
  • Thermosetting plastics will include barelite and epoxy resins.
  • Various engineering machines will include lathe, drilling machine, milling machine, surface grinder and shaping machine.
  • Various machining processes will include turning, boring, drilling, reaming, counter boring, countersinking, tapping, threading, shaping, milling, grinding, slotting, chamfering and spot-facing.
  • Machining terms will include: basic size (of part and of a fit), actual size, maximum limit of size, minimum limit of size, zero line, deviation upper deviation. Lower deviation, actual deviation, tolerance (unilateral and bi-lateral), clearance, maximum clearance, minimum clearance, maximum interference and minimum interference

    3. Casting and forging processes are defined in accordance with accepted definitions.

    4. International Standards Organisation (ISO) limits and fits are listed and described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The implementation, value and functions of the International Standards Organisation (ISO) system are explained.

    6. Conventional representation of machining terms are listed and defined according to organisational requirements.

    7. The complete designations of size limits for a shaft and/or hole are interpreted.
