PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the Qualification, National Certificate in Funeral Services Practice and is registered at Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework. Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a funeral services environment, specialising in Embalming, Marketing and Merchandising or Disaster Management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to each individual and the Funeral Industry as a whole.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of a funeral business
  • Processing funeral documentation
  • Arranging and organising funeral logistics 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competency in:
  • Numeracy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • English, verbal and written communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Computer Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

  • Funeral logistics will include hearse, water, power, grave, funeral accessories, lowering equipment, type of coffin, tents, gazebos, chairs, tables, portable toilets,
  • Funeral carpets, accessories, media, mourners` coach, buses, religious leaders, musicians, traffic escorts, travel arrangements.
  • Bereaved transportation will include mourners` car, family car, taxi, and bus.

    1. Funeral documentation required to process a funeral is completed

    Documents will include identification document, medical report, funeral arrangements forms, notification of death and burial order, invoice, cremation forms, repatriation forms

    2. Area of death is established to enable registration of death procedure to be activated

    3. Registration of death procedure is followed in accordance with established procedures 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Funeral documentation is produced and submitted to relevant authority for action

    1. The transfer of the human remains to the funeral premises is organised

    2. Details for presentation of the human remains is conveyed to relevant individuals

    3. The funeral service is arranged in accordance with the clients wishes, cultural and/or religious beliefs

    4. Media notices, flowers and other items are organised according to instructions

    5. All relevant participants in the funeral service are organised and advised
