PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This standard is aimed at people who work in or intend to work within a chemical industry in general and as applied at a specific site.

Those learners who acquire the outcomes of this standard will know about and be able to use the tools used to perform basic maintenance or assembly and materials used in chemical installations and equipment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Select and arrange tools and materials for maintenance, assembly or process operation
  • Use basic hand tools in accordance with their purpose
  • Clean, maintain and store hand tools
  • Explain the reasons for using specific materials in a specific chemical plant
  • Identify and report faulty or damaged tools and materials

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Maintain health and safety practices in a chemical environment or equivalent competency.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
  • Work regarding maintenance, assembly and process operation is limited to activities carried out `under supervision`
  • The explanation of the work to be done includes describing what must be done and how it will be done
  • Basic hand tools includes the use of hack-saws, saws, hammers, screw drivers, sockets, wrenches, chisels, spanners, pliers, knives and tools used in specific operations (such as jigs or bag filling clamps>)
  • Purpose is that for which the tool was designed and made
  • Use of tools includes safe practice; use in accordance with (manufactures) instructions or best practice
  • Reasons for correct use include ease of work, productivity, safety of self and others
  • Consequences of incorrect use include damage to equipment, tools, risk to self and others, difficulty in achieving desired results
  • Best practice is the manner accepted within the `greater industry` in which tools and materials are used
  • Reasons for needing different materials include strength, flexibility, corrosion/chemical resistance, contamination, resistance to heat & pressure, flammability, conductivity,
  • Materials include metals of different types including types of steel, glass, plastics, rubber, wood, coated materials as used in general and those specific to the site where learning and work take place
  • Benefits of correct material used include service under process operating conditions (chemical compatibility with the process, wear resistance, mechanical strength, temperature, pressure, abrasion >), meeting hygiene requirements, cost
  • Consequences of incorrect use are loss of production, failure/breakdown, contamination, health safety and environmental risk
  • Requirements for handling, storage and use a specific to the materials considered and include protection of the material, safety of people and the environment where it is used and stored, minimization of wastage and pollution
  • Cleaning includes the removal or moisture, dirt, contaminants oiling as required
  • Maintaining tools includes securing parts (handles and sharp/hard part), lubrication corrosion prevention, identification of need for sharpening, but excludes sharpening
  • Storage includes placing tools in designated place in the manner specified that ensures damage to tools, or caused by the tools, does not occur.
  • Storage includes accounting for tools used
  • Inspections includes visual inspection and physical handling
  • `Not fit for use` includes faults on tools, specific to the type of tool, including loose parts, parts missing, parts broken, blunt blades or tips, damaged blades, chipped heads tips & handles that make them ineffective and or hazardous for their intended use.
  • `Not fit for use` of material includes mechanical or chemical damage that results in the material not having the required physical and or chemical properties needed for the intended application and includes cracks, scratches, tears, corrosion, water damage, perforations
