PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for persons who coordinate the maintenance and repairs of vessels.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of different types of maintenance required.
  • Identify the different onboard electronics and electrical equipment and distribution circuits.
  • Assess functionality and performance of equipment onboard vessels. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in the following:
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The coordination of performance, maintenance and repairs is applicable to the following: electrical equipment, mechanical machinery, electronic equipment, hull, pneumatic equipment, refrigeration, safety equipment and systems (fire, lifeboat), refuelling, compass adjusting.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of different types of maintenance required on board vessels.

    Maintenance types may include, but not limited to planned, unscheduled, and routine.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different types of maintenance carried out on vessels is explained as per company procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Coordination between different types of maintenance requirements is executed as per defined work list. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Maintenance requirements are initiated as per request to defined company procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Work lists are verified and spot checks conducted to confirm completion of maintenance as per defined company procedure. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify the different onboard electronics and electrical equipment and distribution circuits.

    The difference between electronic and electrical equipment is explained as per operational requirements.

    The functionality and purpose of electronic equipment is explained as per defined operational requirements.

    Distribution circuits are identified as per vessel layout.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Start up procedures of various equipment types is explained as per operational guidelines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Pre-sailing day start up on all equipment is conducted as per defined company procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment that is faulty is recorded and reported and the necessary corrective action is initiated as per defined company procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Maintenance logbooks are inspected to verify repairs and maintenance activities have been conducted as per legislative requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Planned maintenance activities are initiated as per defined planned maintenance schedule.
