PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in this unit standard will be able to manufacture and place bulk explosive material using a mobile manufacturing unit (MMU).

A MMU is a vehicle equipped with a mixing plant, materials handling equipment and containers used to store & transport raw materials.

On completion of this unit standard the learner must be able to:
  • Interpret instructions in accordance with relevant technology.
  • Collect and take materials to the site.
  • Carry-out pre-manufacturing activities.
  • Manufacture and place bulk explosives.
  • Carry-out post manufacturing activities.
  • Review work done.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence regarding:
  • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy at Level 2, application of process chemistry and related technology or equivalent physical science.
  • Basic safety in the context of the process operation(s) (open cast mines, quarries or construction sites), as well as the use of a MMU.
  • Licence required to drive a MMU.
  • Operation of equipment.

    Where learners do not have the relevant expertise, appropriate adjustments must be made to the learning programme.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The manufacturing and placing of bulk explosives is carried out under conditions typically experienced in open cast mines, quarries or construction sites using MMUs that are of a standard accepted with in the industry.

  • Best practice is understood as the technology applied within the bulk explosives industry in general, including historical procedure used and recent developments.

    Collect and move materials to the site.

    Materials are loaded into the MMU at the prescribed depot or factory in accordance with instructions and best practice.

    Materials are transported to the pre-drilled holes in compliance with the site-specific instructions.

    Action regarding deviations found is taken in accordance with instructions.

  • Actions include reporting and recording deviations and/or changes of recipes in accordance with company instructions and best practice.
  • Recipes are the instructions used to manufacture and place the bulk explosives including mixing instructions, quantities of materials to be mixed and the sequence of placement.
  • Inspections and adjustments of recipes include calculations using formulae, use of tables and may include use of pre-programmes calculators or computers.

    Materials are manufactured and placed in accordance with the relevant recipe.

    Material(s) are manufactured and placed using the MMU and the equipment mounted on or provided with it.

  • Either single or multi material (component) manufacturing is required in terms of this unit standard.
  • Manufacturing includes the operation of the machinery and equipment in accordance with instructions and best practice.
  • Machinery may be manually controlled or automated.
  • Setting and adjusting machinery is required before and during the manufacturing process.
  • Manufacturing includes measuring, mixing and placing of materials. This is done in accordance with the predetermined recipe.
  • All activities are executed, checked and recorded in accordance the quality requirements prescribed by the company.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    MMU and associated equipment is restored to the state specified. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The "state specified" includes:
  • Ensuring unused material is secure and equipment is stored.
  • The MMU is serviceable for movement from the site.
  • Material remaining on the MMU is left in the MMU or off loaded in accordance with instructions.
  • Any faults on the MMU or equipment are identified, repaired and or reported in accordance with instructions.
  • Rectification of faults and or maintenance of the MMU and equipment may be done at any stage of the work activities, subject to compliance with instructions and company instructions.

    The economic value of the placement of bulk explosives is described with reference to the explosives company and the client. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Direct and indirect costs of placement are compared with value added by the success of the blast and cost that could result from substandard blasting that result from inferior manufacturing and placement of explosives.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Effects of blasting on the natural and man made environment are described with reference to ways of minimizing damage and the cost repair/rehabilitation of damage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Impact of bulk explosives industry on people and society is described to with reference to positive and negative matters. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    People include employees, owners, local residents and national interestMatters include employment, added value income generation, health, lifestyle and social upliftment.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    The relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body will oversee assessment and moderation of assessment, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.

    Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the Qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual Unit Standards as well as the integrated competence described in the Qualification.

    Anyone wishing to be assessed against this Qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
