This unit standard is for people who monitor the drying and polishing process, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
The scope of the Unit Standard covers: > Beginning with the last machine component that was started (i.e. the hopper conveyors and the rake conveyors) and move up to the last action i.e. steam valve. > Stopping all the parts that were started and closing everything that was opened. The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 1 in the activity of match manufacturing. The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 4. |

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The dust deflector plates in the polishing drum are checked to ensure that they are in place and that the doors are closed as per work instructions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The polishing wax dispenser is checked to ensure that it is loaded with wax as per work instructions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The polisher is checked and loaded if required as work instructions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Steam pressure level at dryer is checked and if out of speed the machine is not started as per work instructions. |

Machine is started as per working instructions. |

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The rake conveyors and hopper conveyors are started when the hopper is ¼ or more full. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The hopper is run empty if there is going to be a product change over as per production plan. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Chopper Operators are given a signal to start chopping if the hopper is not full. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The Chopper Operators are given a signal to stop chopping if the hopper is full or not operational. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
The mattress is stopped if the drying temperature drops below the specified temp as per work instructions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
The hopper conveyor is stopped if the level of splints in the hopper drops below ¼ of the hopper. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 |
Any mattress jams are removed and the machine is reset and started as per work instructions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 |
The wax slab in the dispenser is checked continuously to see if the wax is being cut as per work instructions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 |
The finished wax slab in the dispenser is replaced with a new one. |

The conveyors and other machine parts that were started are checked continuously to see if they are working as per work instructions. |

Dry splints are tested for moisture content as per work instructions. |

Dried and polished splints are levelled in the splints bin. |

The mattress and the hopper conveyor are stopped when the splints moisture content is out of specification. |

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS |
An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.
The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification. |
