PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can inspect match boxes on the inspection table for any defects and reclaim as many boxes as possible, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Receive and inspect match boxes
  • Monitor quality of match boxes

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

    i) Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 2;
    ii) An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace;
    iii) Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    16 box movement

    a) The scope of the Unit Standard covers:

    i) The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
    ii) All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
    iii) All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
    iv) All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
    v) All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    b) The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 1 in the activity of match manufacturing.

    c) The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 4. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Receive and inspect match boxes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    There are sufficient inner and outer boxes for production as per production plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Inner and outer boxes movement are checked to ensure that they nest freely and that they are not damaged or crushed as per quality specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Box closer's are checked to ensure that they are operating as per quality specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Workplace is cleaned during cleaning time as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Splints are removed from the main drive pit during cleaning time as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Monitor quality of match boxes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Boxes with defects are discarded into waste bin as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Inner boxes without covers are reclaimed and replaced on the inspection table. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Outer boxes without Inners are reclaimed and replaced on the inspection table. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Types of defects and damages are identified and the Team Leader is informed as per working instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Box damage, poor printing, low match counts, small/big or no heads, no ignition strip.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Recurring defects are monitored and reported to the Team Leader as per work instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Match boxes are inspected on the inspection table for dirty, damaged and visibly low match count as per quality specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Damaged boxes and boxes with protruding matches are not allowed to pass to the VAT machine as per quality requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
