PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can operate a peeling machine in order to produce veneer, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Start the machine
  • Process Veneer
  • Reject billet cores
  • Replace the blunt peeling knife
  • Replace the blunt trimming lancets
  • Shut down the Machine 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication and numerical skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 3;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 1 in the activity of match manufacturing.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 4. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Start the machine 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The main air regulator is turned on as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The machine is switched on as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The type of billets (pine/poplar) to be used is checked to ensure that they match the type that is indicated on the operating panel as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The in-feed conveyor is checked to ensure that it moves forward and backward. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Knife and lancets are checked for slow press and replaced if required as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Process Veneer 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The operator ensures that he/she has billets available for peeling as per production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The machine is activated to start peeling billets by lifting the head and table levers as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Rounding waste is removed and pushed into the waste shute as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The log is rounded until continuous veneer is manufactured. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Machine is then stopped and veneer is physically checked for quality as per specification requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stiffness, thickness and/or cracks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Once good quality is determined machine is restarted to produce veneer until reaching minimum diameter as per work instructions.

    If defect is found then machine is reset as per work instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The billet cores are disposed of in the hogger conveyor or in the waste bin if the hogger is not working as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The billet core from the billet that has a soft centre is rejected before peeling is complete as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A billet core that is stuck in one of the two claws is removed before another billet is fed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Replace the blunt peeling knife 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The blunt knife is removed from the machine using Allen-Key and the knife carrier. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The sharp knife is checked to ensure that it is set straight in the knife carrier. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The sharp knife is re-set if found not to be straight while it is in the knife carrier. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The sharp knife in the knife carrier is fitted safely into the machine and fastened and carrier removed as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Removed knife is sent out for sharpening as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Replace the blunt trimming lancets 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The two blunt trimming lancets are removed safely from the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The two sharp trimming lancets are fitted and set to trim the veneer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The two sharp trimming lancets are fitted and set to trim veneer to the width of the veneer as per production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The removed lancets are sent out for sharpening as per work instructions.

    Shut down the Machine

    The main air pressure regulator is turned off as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The machine is switched off as per working instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The cores of pine billets are set to be bigger in diameter than the ones for poplar. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The movement of the conveyor can only be checked if there are no billets on the conveyor 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
