PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for people who can prepare impregnation solution, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Mix and test the Di-Ammonium phosphate solution in the holding tank
  • Conduct Di-Ammonium Phosphate test
  • Conduct tests on Dry Splints

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication and numerical skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 4.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.
  • Dry Splints - The Di-Ammonium Phosphate refers to the salt-like chemical that is used in making the solution in which splints are dipped (impregnated).
  • Specific Gravity refers to the weight of Di-Ammonium Phosphate molecules divided by the equal volume of water i.e. the concentration of the solution.
  • Process Control refers to a document called "Hourly Splint Impregnation. Specific Gravity Control" which has the specifications for Poplar as well as Pine splints Specific Gravity tolerance limits.

The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 1 in the activity of match manufacturing.

The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 4.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Mix and test the Di-Ammonium Phosphate solution in the holding tank.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Tap water is filled up to ± 10cm of the tank lip.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Di-Ammonium Phosphate concentrate is added to the water in the holding tank as per working instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The solution is mixed for ± 10 minutes before testing as per working instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The measuring cylinder is filled with the solution from the holding tank.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The hydrometer is placed in a cylinder containing the solution.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
The Specific Gravity (S.G.) is read off the hydrometer and recorded on the process control sheet.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
Di-Ammonium Phosphate concentrate is added to the solution if the solution is found to be below the tolerance limits that are specified on the Process Control Sheet.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8
Tap water is added to the solution if the solution is found to be above the tolerance limits that are specified on the Process Control Sheet.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9
The solution is tested after the corrective action has been taken and recorded on the process control sheet.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Conduct Di-Ammonium Phosphate test.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The solution from the operating tank is tested in the same way as the solution from the holding tank as per process control sheet.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The solution is tested immediately after mixing at 60-minute interval thereafter and results are recorded on the process control sheet.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Tap water is added to the solution if the S.G. of the solution is above the tolerance limits that are specified on the Process Control Sheet.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The solution from the holding tank is added to the operating tank if the S.G. of the solution in the operating tank is below the tolerance limits specified on the Process Control Sheet.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The solution from the holding tank is added to the operating tank when the level reaches a lower level.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
The solution in the operating tank is drained if it is above the limit on the tank.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Conduct tests on dry splints.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Sample of dry splints is collected from the dryer.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Test is carried out as per work instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Test results are recorded on process control sheet.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Di-ammonium phosphate operating tank is retested if it is out of spec as per work instructions.
