PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who inspect and repair bulk bins and/or pallets
Ensuring they are inspected according to the required Quality standards, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, quality, safety and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Conduct Pre Shift Checks
  • Receive and Inspect Bulk Bins and/or Pallets
  • Repair Bulk Bins and/or Pallets
  • Conduct Post Shift Safety Checks 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

    i) Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 2
    ii) An understanding of the basic activities of the production processes in their workplace
    iii) Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as the inspection and repair area in a wood repair environment.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area by the sample personnel.
  • All the organisation's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have a bearing on the inspection and repair of bulk bins and/or pallets all the other activities in this work area.
  • The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 1 in the inspection and repair of bulk bins and/or pallets.
  • The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in the inspection and repair of bulk bins and/or pallets and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 3. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    Conduct Pre Shift Checks.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Working area is clean and safe for working as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Workbench has all the specified tools, equipment and materials for production as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Components are neatly and safely stacked as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All personal protective equipment is worn in accordance with OSH regulations and work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Ensure all tools and equipment are working to safety requirements and if a problem is detected the Foreman is notified as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Receive and Inspect Bulk Bins and/or Pallets.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Receive Bulk Bins and/or Pallets as per production plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Remove all foreign matter and discard in waste storage facilities as per work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Inspect product for broken components. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Decision is made as to repair requirements based on company requirements and asper work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Repair Bulk Bins and/or Pallets.

    Damaged component is removed using the correct tools as per work instructions 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Damaged component is replaced with "like for like" / identical component. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The Bulk Bin and/or Pallet is squared and repaired as per quality requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An understanding of stacking principles is demonstrated according to company requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Conduct Post Shift Safety Checks.

    Clean working area at end of shift as per work instructions.

    Machinery is cleaned and checked for next shift. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
